Historic win for cricketers
Victorious: the winning Helensburgh Cricket Club first grade team.
HELENSBURGH Cricket Club has its sights set on the two-day title after its historic premiership in the one-day competition earlier this month.
The club had not won a grand final in its 28 years of competition, beating Dapto 155 runs to 87.
Captain-coach Tim Lloyd said it was a great team effort with both bowlers and fielders hungry for the win.
“Everyone bowled well and we didn’t drop any catches in the field,” he said.
Lloyd said the Tigers had adopted a more professional approach to training and the commitment had paid off.
“The intensity wasn’t always there in the past – if you’d seen us five or six years ago, you would have thought ‘what are these blokes doing’,” he said.
“But we put in the hard yards.”
Lloyd said the win was a “massive” result for the club.
“It’s the first premiership in any grade since ’89 – and the first in history for first grade.”
All-rounder Ben Marciante played particularly well during the January 22 match at North Dapto, scoring 43 runs – including three fours and a six – and taking two wickets.
Steve Blissenden also did the Tigers proud, scoring 35 runs, taking a wicket and being involved in two run-outs.
Helensburgh sits atop the table for the two-day competition, with the finals to be held in March.
“That’s the one we really want,” said Lloyd.
